The First Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Transforming the City into an Open-Air Gallery

Art collection exhibition showcasing contemporary art pieces in an elegant gallery setting.

The inaugural Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennale, under the theme “Public Matter”, has officially begun, turning Abu Dhabi and Al Ain into lively open-air art spaces. This event, part of the Public Art initiative by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), spans from November 15, 2024, to April 30, 2025. It features over 70 artists from both the United Arab Emirates and around the world, who are engaging with the notion of “public” in the unique setting of Abu Dhabi.

Exploring the Theme “Public Matter”

The Biennale investigates the idea of public spaces in Abu Dhabi by looking at the ways environmental aspects, community life, traditions, architecture, and urban planning interact. The theme “Public Matter” contemplates what it means to be “public” in the city’s context, shedding light on how communities connect with and perceive public spaces. Significant installations include an 80-meter canvas by Oscar Murillo along Abu Dhabi’s Corniche, Farah Al Qasimi’s auditory sculpture, and Christopher Joshua Benton’s transformation of the Carpet Souq.

Discovering Key Routes and Works of the Biennale

The Biennale presents eight thematic routes that invite visitors to explore notable locations on foot or by car. These routes include the Abu Dhabi Corniche Route, Abu Dhabi Public Parks Route, Abu Dhabi Bus Station Route, and Al Ain Oasis Route, among others. Each route highlights a variety of artistic expressions such as “Barzakh” by Wael Al Awar, “Floating Fragments” by Seema Nusrat, and “D-constructing Collective Exhaustion” by Afra Al Dhaheri.

Community Engagement and Public Programming

The Biennale offers a vibrant public program with lectures, workshops, performances, and community centers. These initiatives aim to foster community involvement and make art accessible to everyone. Highlights include performances by Emirati artist Afra Al Dhaheri at the National Theatre and sound experiences by Safeya Alblooshi at Abu Dhabi’s Corniche. Additional installations and activities will be unveiled in January 2025, signaling the next stage of the exhibition.

The Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennale is a milestone event celebrating creativity and culture, turning Abu Dhabi and Al Ain into dynamic open-air galleries. It provides a unique chance for visitors to engage with the city’s culture and community and will continue to develop with new installations and activities until April 30, 2025. This event is a must-visit for anyone interested in contemporary art and the cultural heritage of the region.
