On January 25, 2024, Etihad Rail reached a significant milestone in developing passenger train services in the UAE by completing its inaugural passenger journey between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhannah. This initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between Etihad Rail and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), aiming to improve worker mobility and fuel economic growth in the region.
Project Background and Objectives
Etihad Rail’s project aims to connect the UAE’s main commercial, industrial, manufacturing, production, logistics, and population hubs. The 250 km line between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhannah is specifically designed to facilitate the travel of ADNOC employees between these two cities.
Service Development and Features
The inaugural passenger journey was completed using a train with four carriages, carrying officials including Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and CEO of ADNOC. The passenger trains will be able to carry up to 400 passengers and reach speeds of 200 km/h, reducing travel times between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to 50 minutes and between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah to 100 minutes.
Benefits and Future Prospects
Besides enhancing worker mobility, this project will significantly contribute to the UAE’s economic growth and infrastructure development. It is anticipated that the passenger train network will connect 11 cities and serve over 36.5 million passengers annually by 2030. A luxury train service, in collaboration with the Italian company Arsenale, is also under development to provide a unique experience for passengers.
The first passenger journey on Etihad Rail between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhannah marks a crucial milestone in the evolution of public transport in the UAE. This project not only promises to ease commuting but also to boost economic growth and sustainable development in the region.
