The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, in collaboration with Google, has launched an ambitious project to document and showcase the rich cultural heritage, traditions, and unique lifestyle of Dubai. This initiative, now in its second phase, features over 130 expertly curated stories, 1,200 images, and 40 videos, highlighting Dubai’s vibrant cultural and artistic legacy for a global audience.

The Background and History of the Project

The project, titled “Dubai’s Culture & Heritage”, was inaugurated by Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and is part of a broader vision to enhance Dubai’s reputation as a global hub of culture and creativity. It includes more than 800 high-resolution images, 120 artifacts, and over 70 narratives that document the past and present of Dubai through the eyes of its residents. This project also aims to raise awareness and engage an international audience with the Emirati culture.

Highlights and Key Features of the Project

The project shines a light on various aspects of Dubai’s culture, including traditional communities such as pearl traders and boat builders, as well as modern artistic and architectural landmarks. It showcases public art installations, traditional embroidery, palm weaving, and the history of coffee in the United Arab Emirates. The second phase delves deeper into Dubai’s diverse sub-communities, such as skateboarding and surfing scenes, and highlights sustainable initiatives like recycled art and eco-friendly food projects.

Access and Engagement on the Platform

The project is accessible via Google Arts & Culture, offering a virtual tour of Dubai’s cultural sites, including the Al-Fahidi district and its traditional architecture. Users can explore stories, videos, and high-resolution images in both Arabic and English, making Dubai’s rich culture and heritage accessible to a global audience. The platform also includes audio stories and interviews with residents, providing a personal and immersive experience.

The ‘Dubai’s Culture & Heritage’ project marks a significant step in preserving and promoting Dubai’s unique cultural identity. By leveraging technology and collaborating with Google Arts & Culture, the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority ensures that the city’s rich heritage is not only preserved but also celebrated and shared worldwide. This initiative serves as a model for cultural preservation and digital storytelling, making Dubai’s culture more accessible and engaging for a global audience.
