The Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi has launched a new residency program for artists and cultural professionals. This initiative aims to enrich Abu Dhabi’s artistic and cultural landscape by attracting international talents across various fields, including visual arts, performing arts, literature, and media.
The Ambitious Goals of the Residency Program
The artist residency program is designed to support creative practitioners from all disciplines. It offers a unique opportunity to work in artist studios in Abu Dhabi, with specialized resources and facilities tailored to each artistic domain. The program is open to artists from the MENASA region (Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia), underscoring Abu Dhabi’s commitment to establishing itself as a global cultural hub.
Who is Eligible and What are the Benefits?
Eligible candidates must be over 21 and not enrolled in a degree program during the residency. The program provides private studios, accommodation for those not based in Abu Dhabi, travel expenses, a daily allowance, and a production budget. Residencies last five months and are organized into two cohorts per year, one beginning in February and the other in June, allowing for flexible planning for interested artists.
Global Impact and Inspiring Examples
Similar initiatives, such as the Ras Al Khaimah residency program and that of the Cultural Foundation, also offer creation and exhibition opportunities for artists. These programs include monthly workshops, exhibitions, and public art installations, contributing to the enrichment of the local art scene. The impact of these programs is not only seen in the cultural diversity they bring but also in the professional and personal growth of the participating artists.
The new artist residency program in Abu Dhabi marks a significant opportunity for creators from diverse backgrounds to grow and contribute to the region’s cultural diversity. By providing resources and networking opportunities, the program aims to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a major center for arts and culture.
