Abu Dhabi has launched its inaugural Public Art Biennial, called “Public Matter,” a five-month-long event that gathers over 70 contemporary artists to explore the notion of public space within the distinct setting of the Emirati capital. Hosted by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, the Biennial showcases installations and performances at prominent locations throughout Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
Investigating the Idea of “Public Matter”
The Biennial scrutinizes the dynamic concept of public space through perspectives of environment, community, urbanity, and indigeneity. It emphasizes the balance between modern urban expansion and traditional indigenous customs, tackling the issue of preserving cultural values in the face of rapid development and economic transformations. The event converts urban sites into public art venues, such as notable places like the Abu Dhabi Bus Terminal and the traditional mudbrick houses of Al Ain along with its oases.
Artistic Interventions and Community Involvement
The Biennial showcases over 70 artworks, including sculptures, large-scale installations, performances, and community involvement projects. These creations strive to forge a connection between the city’s past and its present, enhancing the accessibility and liveliness of public spaces. Distinguished participating artists include Hussein Sharif from Dubai and Nnenna Okore from Chicago, among other prominent and up-and-coming talents. The installations encourage community interaction and are openly accessible, democratizing art without the necessity of a museum visit.
Impact and Accessibility
The Biennial underscores inclusivity by making art accessible to all. The initiative redefines public spaces to encompass broader ecosystems, including the interaction between art and local wildlife. The event is scheduled from November 15, 2024, to April 30, 2025, providing the public with ample opportunities to engage with the various artistic interventions across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
The debut of Abu Dhabi’s first Public Art Biennial represents a significant cultural occasion that not only applauds art and creativity but also promotes community involvement and emphasizes the significance of public spaces. This initiative by the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism marks a milestone for future public art events, underscoring the city’s dedication to cultural preservation and urban progress.
