The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has inaugurated the first Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, a landmark event that transforms Abu Dhabi and Al Ain into a celebration of creativity and culture. This biennial event, taking place from November 15, 2024, to April 30, 2025, signifies the government’s dedication to developing a comprehensive cultural infrastructure and showcases pioneering public art installations that enrich the cultural environment of the Emirates.

Exploring the Concept of “Public” through Art

This event is a key component of the Public Art Abu Dhabi initiative, which was introduced by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi in March 2023. The biennial delves into the notion of ‘public’ within the unique context of Abu Dhabi, featuring the work of over 70 artists from the region and around the world. The art installations are strategically placed along eight routes, encouraging visitors to experience Abu Dhabi’s iconic sites in new and inventive ways.

Community Activities and Engagement

The biennial encompasses a range of community outreach activities, including lectures, film screenings, interactive experiences, workshops, children’s programs, guided tours, and wellness events. The Hubs, situated in locations such as the Carpet Souq, Lake Park, Formal Park, Corniche Beach, and Urban Park, host performances, pop-up restaurants, and lively shops, fostering a festive atmosphere throughout the duration of the event.

Strengthening Cultural Identity in the Emirates

The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial underscores the DCT Abu Dhabi’s commitment to commissioning public artworks for the emirate. The biennial will occur every two years, alternating with the Manar Abu Dhabi light art exhibition. It aims to enhance the collective cultural identity of the emirate by offering transformative, inclusive, and accessible art experiences to both residents and visitors.

The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial represents a new chapter in the cultural development of the Emirates, highlighting the value of public art that is open to all. This cultural initiative is set to continue inspiring and engaging local and international communities in the years ahead.
