The United Arab Emirates (UAE) reiterated their strong commitment to the Global Cooling Pledge at the COP29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. This initiative, launched during COP28, aims to cut emissions related to cooling and enhance access to sustainable cooling solutions. The UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, emphasized the importance of international collaboration to address the growing demand for cooling and its impact on climate change.

Background and Key Goals of the Global Cooling Pledge

Initiated at COP28 in Dubai, the Global Cooling Pledge has garnered support from over 71 countries and 60 non-state actors. The pledge targets a 68% reduction in cooling-related emissions by 2050 and a 50% increase in the global average efficiency of new air conditioners by 2030. Passive cooling measures alone could cut the demand for cooling by 24% by 2050, thus preventing the release of 1.3 billion tonnes of CO2 annually.

The Role of the UAE and Its Initiatives in Sustainable Cooling

The Emirates have been at the forefront of sustainable cooling initiatives. The country has implemented national strategies incorporating new urban cooling technologies and the gradual phase-out of harmful refrigerants. Tabreed, the UAE’s leading international urban cooling company, has highlighted its innovations, such as the G2COOL geothermal project, and played a key role supporting the UNEP-led Cool Coalition during COP29.

Future Outlook and International Cooperation

The working session of the Global Cooling Pledge at COP29 focused on assessing progress, identifying gaps, and crafting future strategies. Emphasis was placed on integrating cooling targets into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and plans were announced to establish an intergovernmental cooling committee during COP30. International cooperation and the exchange of innovations and best practices are crucial to achieving the ambitious goals of the Global Cooling Pledge.

In summary, the UAE’s commitment to the Global Cooling Pledge at COP29 underscores the urgency and significance of sustainable cooling in addressing climate change. Through collective actions and innovative solutions, the global community can significantly reduce emissions and ensure equitable access to essential cooling solutions.
