On November 16, 2024, the skies over the United Arab Emirates will be illuminated by the last supermoon of the year, known as the ‘Beaver Moon’. This celestial event will coincide with the Leonids meteor shower, offering a unique spectacle of a full moon and meteor trails. This article guides you on how and where to witness this event, including an observation event organized by the Dubai Astronomy Group at Al Qudra Desert.

The ‘Beaver Moon’: A Supermoon and Its Origins

The ‘Beaver Moon’ is the fourth and final supermoon of 2024. Its name hails from Native American traditions, when beavers build their winter dams in November. This supermoon is special as it coincides with the full moon at its closest approach to Earth, known as perigee, making it appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.

When and How to Observe the ‘Beaver Moon’ and the Leonids Meteor Shower

The prime time to observe the ‘Beaver Moon’ is at moonrise on November 16, about 20 to 30 minutes after sunset. The moon will be visible in the constellation of Taurus, near the star cluster known as the Pleiades, or the ‘Seven Sisters’. The Leonids meteor shower, occurring from November 6 to 30, will also be visible, with its peak expected in the early hours of November 16 and 17.

Tips for Optimal Viewing

For an optimal experience, select a location with a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. The Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting an observation event at Al Qudra Desert on November 16, from 8 PM to midnight, where telescopes will be available for more detailed observation. Ensure you allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness for about 30 minutes to maximize your view of the meteors.

The ‘Beaver Moon’ and the Leonids meteor shower will offer a unique and unforgettable celestial show. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the night sky and the expertise of the Dubai Astronomy Group.
