ADNOC Deploys AI Technology to Optimize Oil Reservoirs

High-tech oil refinery control room showcasing advanced AI technology, featuring 3D models of oil reservoirs and technicians using smart devices.

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has recently implemented the Advanced Reservoir 360 (AR360) solution from AIQ on more than 30 reservoirs, following a successful initial deployment in the Bab and Umm Shaif fields. This initiative showcases the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance energy efficiency, manage complex energy systems, and lower greenhouse gas emissions in the UAE’s oil sector.

Development and Implementation of the AR360 Solution

ADNOC, in partnership with AIQ and SLB, developed the AR360 solution as part of its ENERGYai initiative. This technology leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve reservoir management and optimize the planning of oil field development. The initial rollout on the Bab and Umm Shaif fields delivered promising results, prompting an extension of the solution to over 30 reservoirs.

Economic and Environmental Benefits of AR360

The AR360 solution significantly reduces planning time and enhances both the lifespan and recovery rates of wells. It achieves an optimal balance between drilling new wells, boosting the performance of existing wells, and optimizing injection and production volumes. Moreover, AR360 consolidates all data onto a single platform, facilitating proactive and effective decision-making.

Diversification of AI Projects by ADNOC and Positive Impact

In addition to the AR360 solution, ADNOC has deployed other AI tools, such as RoboWell for autonomous well operations and Neuron 5 for process optimization. These technologies have helped generate a value of 500 million dollars in 2023 and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1 million tonnes between 2022 and 2023. These initiatives support ADNOC’s ambition to become the most advanced energy company in terms of AI and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.

In conclusion, the deployment of the AR360 solution and other AI technologies by ADNOC marks a significant turning point in optimizing oil reservoirs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These initiatives illustrate the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in the energy sector, ensuring a responsible and sustainable energy transition.
