Dubai Municipality has initiated a major endeavor to enhance sustainable waste management in the Hatta region, in collaboration with Imdaad. The project aims to transform the Hatta landfill into an advanced facility for sorting and transferring waste to treatment sites in Dubai. The goal is to reduce waste production, increase recycling and treatment rates, and promote the principles of the circular economy, in alignment with Dubai’s Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041 and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 commitment.
Background and Key Objectives
This project is part of the “Zero Waste in Hatta” campaign and aims to divert 20 tons of municipal solid waste from landfills daily. The Hatta landfill has been transformed into a 60,043 square meter facility that includes an administrative office and a waste disposal area. This initiative also processes 27 tons of agricultural waste per day, sent to the Warsan waste-to-energy plant.
Implementation and Partnerships
Dubai Municipality has partnered with Imdaad to manage waste collection, transportation, and recycling services in Hatta. The project includes the distribution of over 2,500 new waste storage and collection containers, color-coded to encourage source separation. Imdaad has also implemented a two-bin system and collaborates with authorities and community influencers to enhance waste management behaviors among residents.
Awareness and Community Engagement
To raise public awareness, Dubai Municipality and Imdaad have organized direct awareness programs involving more than 900 families, staff from 20 educational institutions, and 300 farms. Imdaad’s “My Environment” program aims to educate schoolchildren about recycling, waste sorting, and environmental protection. Additionally, educational visits for students are planned at the Imdaad Farz plant in the Jebel Ali community.
The initiative led by Dubai Municipality and Imdaad marks a significant step towards achieving sustainable waste management in the Hatta region. By promoting source separation, increasing recycling rates, and adopting circular economy practices, this project aligns with Dubai’s broader sustainability goals and contributes to the UAE’s vision of becoming a leader in environmental protection.
