Microsoft and G42 have announced the setting up of two new artificial intelligence centers in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant milestone in their collaboration to advance responsible AI and address key societal challenges. This initiative builds on their partnership established earlier this year and is backed by the governments of the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

Context and Objectives of this Innovative Partnership

The first center, co-founded and co-funded by G42 and Microsoft, will focus on developing and advancing best practices and industry standards for responsible AI usage in the Middle East and the Global South. This center will bring together academic researchers and AI practitioners to develop, document, and share emerging practices of responsible AI. The second center, an extension of Microsoft’s AI for Good Research Lab, will support AI projects addressing key societal objectives such as food security, climate resilience, and disaster preparedness.

Key Initiatives and Strategic Collaborations

The AI for Good Research Lab in Abu Dhabi will collaborate with non-profit organizations and partners to tackle economic and societal challenges across the Middle East and Africa. It will prioritize the development of large language models for underrepresented languages, thus helping to bridge the global linguistic divide. Additionally, the lab will apply AI to high-resolution geospatial data to bolster food security and climate resilience. The partnership also involves close collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Center for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position in AI innovation.

Commitment to Responsible AI and Security

Both Microsoft and G42 are dedicated to ensuring the safe development, deployment, and use of generative AI models and applications. This includes implementing digital safety and cybersecurity plans, as well as establishing red teaming processes to reinforce AI systems against attacks. G42’s adoption of these policies aims to solidify the UAE’s position as a globally trusted hub for AI.

The establishment of these AI centers in Abu Dhabi underscores Microsoft and G42’s commitment to leveraging technology for societal betterment. This collaboration not only strengthens the relationship between the two companies but also between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, positioning Abu Dhabi as a global leader in responsible AI innovation.
